TITLE: THE LOTUS LAY DISCIPLE
In Anguttara Book of Fives, 175, the Buddha outlined five qualities that make one a lotus disciple. Monks, pursuing five things, a layman is the jewel of laymen, the lily of laymen, the lotus of laymen. What five? He has faith; he is virtuous; he is not supertitious; he is believes in the Law of Kamma, not luck; he seeks within (the Order) for a gift-worthy person and therefore, first offers service.
BIODATA
Bro. Chan Khoon San was born on 8 August 1941 in Penang. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a Senior Research Chemist in a large plantation company. He is married with two grown-up daughters and three grandchildren. After retirement in 1996 Bro. Chan went to Myanmar to pursue the intensive practice of Satipatthana Vipassana meditation under the guidance of Chanmyay Sayadaw Ven. Janakabhivamsa at the Chanmyay Yeiktha Meditation Centre in Yangon. Today he still continues the intensive practice of Vipassana meditation at Chanmyay Centre during the cold season in December/January every year. For the rest of the year, he conducts Sutta classes at various Buddhist societies in the Klang Valley. Since 1991, he has led fourteen Buddhist pilgrimage groups to India. He is the author of three books namely: 'Buddhism Course'; ‘Buddhist Pilgrimage’ and 'No Hinayana in Buddhism'.
